Templepatrick, Northern Ireland – AdaptNI, in partnership with Hilton Templepatrick, inaugurated Deaf Awareness Week 2024 with a Star Wars-themed event on Saturday, 4th May. The celebration, resonating with this year's theme 'Love and Trust', was attended by over 100 guests and featured a range of accessible activities.
The event hosted an accessible disco that included subtitled and British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted musical favourites, adding to the inclusivity of the festivities. Highlights of the day included a BSL Signed Flash Mob and appearances by beloved Star Wars characters, beautiful princesses and even a Birthday Celebration , creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere.
Staff at Hilton Templepatrick, trained in Deaf awareness, ensured that all attendees could enjoy the day’s activities, which included a raffle and a bingo game. Generous donations from local businesses such as The Hilton, TenSquare, the Galgorm Group, LIDL, Spar, and the exquisite pieces donated by Newtownabbey Deaf WoodTurner Ed McAuley contributed to the success of the event.
“The day was not only about celebration but also about highlighting the significance of Deaf awareness," said Laura Sloan, Director AdaptNI. "We are thrilled with the turnout and the funds raised. Thanks to everyone’s support, we raised nearly £500, all of which will be directly used to provide specialist support for the Deaf, those with hearing loss, and tinnitus communities.”
