Celebrating Talent Amidst Uncertainty: Deaf Chef Shines at Dobbies Antrim

Antrim, Northern Ireland

Yesterday’s news of Dobbies in Antrim facing closure has left the local community saddened. However, amidst this uncertain future, the spotlight shines brightly on one of the store’s talented employees – a Deaf chef who has won the hearts of customers with his delicious baked treats, cooked meals, and renowned afternoon teas.

For only £20 for two people, his afternoon tea has become a favourite, featuring a selection of finely crafted pastries and savoury delights. His passion for creating high-quality food has been a key draw for Dobbies, making it a local culinary destination.

Today, AdaptNI submitted their application to Workable NI (www.sesni.org.uk) with the hope of providing much-needed in-work support. AdaptNI, known for its specialist employment services, plans to deliver tailored support, ensuring the chef can continue to thrive in his role, even during the uncertainty of the closure. This will include job-specific

Deaf awareness training and British Sign Language (BSL) lessons for his colleagues, helping them communicate better and work effectively as a team.

“We’re proud to support this talented chef,” says Laura from AdaptNI. “His skills deserve to be recognised, and our goal is to ensure he can continue working in an inclusive and supportive environment, no matter what happens.”

AdaptNI’s work will focus not only on supporting the chef but also on educating his colleagues and creating an inclusive workplace that values diversity. This initiative highlights the importance of specialist employment support in securing meaningful work for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.

Andrew Orr - Dobbies Antrim - Hospitality Manager added, "Dobbies are delighted to work alongside AdaptNI to induct Cain into our business with a dynamic approach to working with correct adaptions to best fit the needs of the employer and employee. Cain has found this transition seamless and engaging and with the correct ongoing support we feel the ability to support Cain better in his various roles and skills. The team have embraced this and in fact there has been some comical moments for both! A classic appointment with the satisfaction for both parties. Well done Cain."

As Dobbies Antrim faces its next chapter, the community will continue to rally behind the staff who have made the store special. AdaptNI’s efforts to ensure their Deaf chef continues to thrive is a powerful example of inclusivity in action.
