Yesterday, Tuesday 18th February 2025 marked an uplifting and encouraging day for the Deaf community in Northern Ireland as the second stage of the Sign Language Bill was debated at Stormont. As the only provider of employment and training support for the Deaf, hearing loss, and tinnitus communities in Northern Ireland, AdaptNI is thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone.
The debate was a testament to the commitment of all parties at Stormont to advancing the rights of the Deaf community. The recognition and promotion of British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) as official languages in Northern Ireland is a historic step forward. The positive and inclusive discussions were truly inspiring, and the tangible positivity was felt by all who witnessed the debate, even online.
At AdaptNI, we are excited about the future changes and legislation that will enhance accessibility and inclusion for the Deaf community. Our staff hold qualifications in both BSL and ISL, which will further support communication within the community.
We stand ready to support the implementation of this important legislation and look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders. Our commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible society remains unwavering.
Yesterday's debate was a reminder of the power of collective effort and the importance of recognising and promoting the rights of the Deaf community. We are grateful for the support shown by all parties at Stormont and are optimistic about the positive impact this legislation will have.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to work towards a brighter future for the Deaf community in Northern Ireland.
